SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT
Classical industrial procedures use as catalysts for gas combustion noble metals with nanometric structure dispersed in a support medium. However, these materials are prohibitively expensive, making the discovery of affordable alternatives essential for industrial competitivity. Recent research has focused on employing oxide compounds, materials of high variety and low cost, as catalysts for combustion. There were presented compositions and preparation procedures for oxide compounds to be used for air purification and lowering the concentration of burnt gases from motor engines. The catalytic properties are determined both by the composition and the structure (particles size, specific area, porosity) of the compound. This project aims to investigate the catalytic properties of a number of new semiconducting oxide compounds, ferrites and perovskites, prepared by an original procedure – selfcombustion. The procedure, recently patented by us, allows obtaining oxide compounds with precise composition, nanometric structure and controlled growth of crystals. We plan to identify catalytic compounds for combustion in air at moderate temperatures of a number of combustible gases and vapours in low concentrations. We will examine the influence on the catalytic properties of the compound structure and composition, the working temperature, and the gas concentration in air. The catalytic effect will be certified by the decrease in burnt gas concentration in the presence of the catalyst.
